According to the French dictionary "The Robert", a maid is
a domestic, a home employee living on her working place. A maid is different
from the cleaning lady. Her first activity is to make sure that everything
is well done and be at the service of her employers.
Nowadays, especially in Morocco, maids are usually cleaning ladies. They
are subjected to hard work systems, from preparing the breakfast, taking
care of the house, washing, ironing, sometimes elaborating meals and finally
taking care of the children if there are some in the house…
When they are respected, maids can work for the same employer for many
years. Then, a trust relation is established between them. Unfortunately,
it is not always the case and many maids are not respected by their employers.
When they work for very rich people, they wear a uniform like all the
other house employees. A perfect way to know who is who, and who is doing
what in the house. A considerable number of "new rich" Moroccans
bring maids home but have difficulties to keep them. The same thing for
some Europeans who are not used to this level of life and could not afford
it in Europe, a total lack of respect. It is hard to know why those people
treat their employees so bad...
The different maids I met, told me they prefer working for Europeans rather
than for Moroccans because they never respect them. The luck has a lot
to do with this problem. Because, they can also meet bad European like
Moroccan. It is becoming more and more difficult to find a woman who accepts
to do the maid job. They generally talk about lack of respect, sometimes
the obligation to do sexual intercourses with employers (if they are pregnant,
they loose their job), they are badly paid and have no working contract.
They overwork, since they start early in the morning and finish late in
the evening, the derogatory aspect of their job, … That is why plenty
of women prefer to work as cleaning ladies rather than as maid. Meanwhile,
when it is respectably done, the maid job has nothing of purgatory. A
clean house is synonymous of a satisfied, respectful employer and a good
working atmosphere. Usually, this job is done by non-qualified women who
could not find a job and have to contribute to their families obligations.
Sometimes, it is done by young girls to escape of a tyrannical family,
so they ensure a shelter, nurture and calmness.
Do not mix up between cleaning ladies and maids. Even if they are almost
the same, they are different. It is up to you to choose the one that better
suits to you. A great number of employees are not declared while working
contract and legal scale of charges, … exist.
If you want to bring a maid home, just be respectful to her and you will
have a good return. The best way to have one is "from mouth to ear"
research, tell your friends you are looking for a maid and you will have
a trusty one. You will notice that a maid home is a pure happiness…
